Reasons for development
In 2313, the Centauri Republic, in an attempt to regain its economic clout, began building high quality, large transport ships to compete on trade routes with its neighbors. However, it was not enough for the Centauri to build just a transport ship, so they created a multifunctional ship that, depending on the modification, could perform the functions of cargo and civilian transportation, as well as in military modification deliver a significant amount of fighter force to the battlefield.
The Pride of Tavari
The Centauri influential Tavari clan, who are the main spacecraft manufacturers for the Republic, are quite proud of this ship. In it, the engineers managed to combine multifunctional design, style and elegance typical of the Centauri nobility.
Even the Centauri Emperor uses a special modification of the Itaro as his personal transportation.

Modifications
Cargo version
The cheapest version of the Itaro is a purely cargo ship, with substantial internal compartments (approximately 800000 cubic meters), and 6 outboard containers of 100000 cubic meters each. Another approximately 100000 cubic meters of small cargo can be distributed in other compartments of the ship if desired. A total of 1.5 million cubic meters of cargo can be carried by 1 ship.
Universal modification
The most common modification is passenger-cargo ship. In this variant the cargo volume of the ship is slightly less than that of the cargo modification, but the ship is additionally equipped with 1000 passenger cabins.
Passenger version
The purely passenger modification has onboard cabins for 10,000 passengers. Thanks to external hangers for cargo containers, even the passenger version can carry a considerable amount of cargo.
Military version
The military modification instead of 6 cargo containers carries special launch hangars containing 6 Xoeni-class drones (36 drones in total). In addition, a heavy pulse cannon is installed on the bow, which can support the fleet strike force with fire and cover the rear. In the internal compartments, this modification can still accommodate about 800,000 cubic meters of cargo.
Combat modification
Radical modification of the military version allows using internal bays for transportation of drones (up to 80 units) or other small equipment (attack drones, blockade mines, etc.). Only the deployment of this equipment requires more time than launching drones from external suspended hangars.
Operation
Internal use
The Royal Centauri Navy utilizes both cargo and military modifications. Since the necessary external containers can be suspended quickly, each Itaro-class ship is equipped as needed with the right number of drones in literally an hour. In the event of war, re-equipping the 41 ships in the fleet can be accomplished in literally a week. This approach allows the Centauri to reinforce their tactical squadrons with additional aircraft carrier supply ships.
In the civilian fleet, a few Itaro regularly fly between the major worlds of the Interstellar Alliance. These are mostly fairly expensive and comfortable variations of the liners.
External use and export
In addition, the Centauri were a serious competitor to the Brakiri among the worlds of the former League of Non-Aligned Worlds in terms of cargo transportation. Not only did they do the shipping themselves, but they also started a program of leasing their ships, allowing less wealthy races to take advantage of the capabilities of large cargo ships.
Several Itaro-class ships were purchased by Earth companies.

In total, as of 2341, Centauri shipyards had produced over a hundred of these ships. Approximately 40% of that number were exported.
